Dick DeVos Ensures Progress Under Any Circumstance

Dick and Betsy DeVos have made a lifetime commitment to philanthropy by taking nonprofit positions and pursuing charitable work; Betsy has shown primary focus in the area of education and boasts about progress in the school system. She holds a strong opinion about traditional public schools and their lack of success, but looks forward to the future and the growing amount of students entering public, funded private-choice programs. Betsy says her and her husband’s commitment began when they saw the opportunity to enroll their own children in what they considered were better schools and wanted to help other families have that choice as well. Betsy began the educational-choice movement to address the real problem and allow parents to enroll their children accordingly, no matter what the circumstances were. She was heavily involved in the passing of Michigan’s first charter-school bill in 1993 and began the Great Lakes Education Project, which was devoted to the expansion of charter schools and promoting educational reform.

Dick and Betsy DeVos are innovative in both business and politics, Dick has held executive positions at numerous companies including his most recent position as president at The Windquest Group. He is the leader of the Education Freedom Fund, which awarded more than 40,000 scholarships to underprivileged children in Michigan. He also served on Michigan’s State Board of Education in 1990. His community efforts go beyond education with improvements to the Grand Rapids’ downtown area, convention center, heart hospital, medical school and the market. DeVos’ efforts do not go unnoticed as he was the Republican candidate for Governor of Michigan in 2006.
